Exploring Alderney
Best way to get around in Alderney is by bicycle or to walk and in that way, appreciate the beauty of the island's coast. Explore the Alderney Stones, huge organic boulders created by world famous sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. These huge stones are strategically place around the island and open to the elements with the intention that over time, the Stones will evolve with the weather and eventually return their Alderney contents to the land.
Alderney has the only railway in the Channel Islands, thanks to the support and enthusiasm of volunteers . The railway line was inaugurated by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The diesel engine pulls former London Underground carriages built in 1938 along a scenic coastal route before cutting across country towards Mannez Quarry and the nearby Mannez Lighthouse.Â
The Alderney Museum, opened in 1966, gives a unique and quirky insight into Alderney's fascinating history from Neolithic times to the modern technological age of the 21st century. Among the items worth seeing are artefacts from the shipwrecks around the island including a cannon and muskets from an Elizabethan warship discovered less than a mile off the island's north-east coast.
Fort Albert is one of several forts on the island that provide a relevant military salute along with the German relics left over from WWII.
Discover the Undiscovered.Â
Unspoilt, blissfully quiet and ruggedly beautiful, Alderney is the undiscovered Channel Island, the peaceful little sister who has much to offer the discerning traveller and interested historian. It is a place that in some ways speaks for itself with Victorian fortifications dotted around the coast and World War II bunkers begging to be explored, but a guided tour can add enormously to the interest of your trip.
Braye Beach Hotel, in conjunction with Alderney Tours now offers you an opportunity to explore our history with a local guide by minibus, then to continue your exploration by electric bicycle, hire car or on foot to really get a feel of this truly memorable place. Your package includes guided minibus tour, museum entrance, guided town walk and use of torches and hard hats for bunker exploration.
Cost £60 per person. Minimum 2 pax.
